Now batting…

“The most difficult thing in life is to know yourself.”  -Thales

And so begins the blog that will make me famous.  Like Perez Hilton.  Except not.

At work, introductions go: name, how long you’ve worked for the company, and something interesting about yourself.  Instead, why don’t I just tell you I’m 25, live in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and if the previous sentence didn’t give it away, work in a call center for great big multinational company.  You’ll figure the rest out as you read this blog.  And you won’t be alone, as I’ll be trying to figure myself out as we go.  Thanks for the inspiration, Thales.

Now let me just say right up front that I don’t want you and I to have some ugly falling out when I talk about eating marionberry cheesecake while watching the Red Sox game and reading a gay blog during the commercials. And you, being a homophobic Yankee fan who thinks marionberry farmers exploit migrant workers or something, decide I’m not your cup of tea.  So for the sake of avoiding such an ordeal let’s get started with a taste of what’s to come.

This blog will be all over the place, but in no special order, here are the topics that will likely make their way into our colloquy:

Music:
Few things excite me more than when I discover a new artist or band that really clicks with me.  When you hear a song for the first time and that thing happens where your entire consciousness is jolted into absorbing every last drop that comes out of the speaker, you want to share that with someone.  So there’ll be some of that and perhaps some criticisms as well.  I’m currently listening to Band of Horses (more to come on them).  Other favorites range anywhere from The Killers to Elvis; from Rufus (and Martha) Wainwright to Elton John; and lately anywhere from intellectual yet catchy post punk / indie rock type stuff to guilty pleasures like “Don’t Stop the Music” by Rihanna.

Politics:
Think: Al Gore.  That should tell you all you really need to know about my political beliefs for now.  (Run, Al, run!)Zen Living cover

Baseball:
I’m a HUGE Red Sox fan, so yeah I’ll be talking about that a lot especially now that they’re um… IN THE WORLD SERIES!

Gay interests:
From high-brow political issues like gay marriage to frivolous gay pop culture like “OMG! Dumbledore is gay!

Buddhism:
A few years ago, I, the godless heathen that I was, decided I’d try to find religion.  Instead, I found The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Zen Living.  Since then I’ve been hooked, and in my own undisciplined westerner way, tried to make the dharma relevant to me.  I’ll share Aha! moments with you as I have them.

Consumer interests:
I decided I’m going to start writing letters to companies that piss me off.  Should be fun.  I’ll share whatever good or bad experiences I have with customer service entities I encounter.  And about what I had to do to check the code on the Dr. Pepper lid to see if I was “1 in 6” who won “Cool Football Prizes.”

Working in Corporate America:
Here I’ll chronicle whatever risings to the top, pitfalls, Office Space or The Office moments I encounter and feel like sharing.

Wikipedia discoveries:
I’m a sucker for a good wikipedia article and will pass on the good ones as I come across them.

So that’s it for now.  Tomorrow night is game 1. Go Sox!
